ChatGPT ads for law firms, tested before they scale

ChatGPT ads are labeled, sponsored cards that appear under some ChatGPT answers. We set them up for law firms with tracking tied to signed cases, and we run the first 30 days as a test, not a promise.

The short answer

What are ChatGPT ads for law firms?

ChatGPT ads are sponsored cards that appear below some answers in ChatGPT for logged-in adults on the Free and Go plans. You set a budget, a bid, a location and written context hints. OpenAI's system decides which conversations your ad fits. As of October 2026, Ads Manager is still in beta, the U.S. minimum is $25 a day, and OpenAI told reporters in September that it did not yet have benchmarks across industries.

For a law firm, that makes ChatGPT advertising (also called OpenAI ads for law firms) a test channel. It can reach people while they research a problem. It does not give you keyword control or a search-terms report the way Google Search does, and early public results are mixed. We run it as a small, measured experiment next to your Google Ads and Meta ads, not as a replacement for them.

ChatGPT vs Google

How ChatGPT ads differ from Google Search ads.

If you know Google Ads, the biggest change is that you do not buy keywords. You describe a situation and OpenAI decides when it fits. Here is the side-by-side as of October 2026.

Google Search
ChatGPT ads
What you target
Keywords people type, with match types.
Written context hints that describe a topic or situation. Hints are guidance, not rules, and people do not need to use your exact words.
What you see in reports
A search-terms report showing real queries.
Totals such as impressions, clicks, spend, click-through rate, cost per click and conversions. OpenAI does not show the prompts.
Who you can reach
Mature location, audience and schedule controls.
Country, state, city or postal code, plus device surface. Uploaded customer lists need at least 25,000 matched users. OpenAI's documentation lists no job title, age, interest or lookalike targeting.
Negative keywords
Yes.
OpenAI says hints cannot enforce exclusions.
What the ad looks like
A text ad in the search results.
A card labeled sponsored with a name, title, short description, image and link. OpenAI says ads do not change the answer.
How settled is it
Years of data and standard benchmarks.
Beta. Controls, budgets and reporting have already changed several times in 2026.
What to expect

What public tests show so far.

OpenAI has not published performance numbers for law firms, and no public benchmark for legal advertising on ChatGPT existed as of October 2026. What exists are tests that advertisers and agencies chose to publish. Treat them as examples, not forecasts.

Click prices vary a lot

Typical public tests show click-through rates of roughly 0.6% to 1.8% and cost per click from under $3 to above $20, depending on the advertiser, the offer and the country.

Clicks are not cases

In several published tests, clicks arrived at acceptable prices but almost no sign-ups followed. One same-site comparison of about 1,500 visitors measured a 0.21% conversion rate from ChatGPT ads against 3.71% from Google. That was one website, not a controlled study, and not a law firm.

Google is the reference point

WordStream's 2025 data for attorney and legal services on Google Search shows an average cost per click of about $8.58 and a 5.09% conversion rate. That is a mature channel with different traffic, so it is something to compare against, not a target for ChatGPT.

Traffic quality is still being studied

An October 2026 industry report flagged invalid click rates as high as 34% in a sample of advertisers. Its methods are not fully public, so we treat it as a reason to check traffic quality closely, not as a platform-wide figure.

You cannot pick the conversation

OpenAI keeps ads out of sensitive conversations, and its FAQ names personal health, mental health and politics. A firm should not count on appearing next to someone describing a crisis, and we will not promise it.

Budget math: $25 a day is about $750 over 30 days. At the $3 to $5 starting bids OpenAI recommends, that buys roughly 150 to 250 clicks. That is enough to learn whether the traffic is relevant. It is not enough to set a reliable cost per signed case. A $25 daily budget can also spend up to $50 on one day, and is capped at $175 over a Sunday to Saturday week.

Best fit: firms that already run working Google Ads and intake, can afford a small test, and are comfortable with a small sample. Wait if you do not yet track calls and signed cases, or if you need new cases this month. Honest note: we are launching ChatGPT ads management now and have no ChatGPT ads results to show yet. We build and measure it the way we do Google and Meta, and we will not borrow those numbers to sell this.

Policy and compliance

What OpenAI's policy says about legal ads.

As of October 2026, OpenAI's ad policy allows U.S. ads for legal advice, representation or legal services only when the advertiser is licensed to practice law in the jurisdiction where the ad appears. Legal-services ads outside the U.S. are prohibited. OpenAI reviews these ads case by case, so approval is not guaranteed.

State bar advertising rules still apply on top of that. We write ads and landing pages around the firm's service and process, leave out outcome claims, and send everything to the firm for its own compliance review before launch. ROI Society is a marketing agency, not a law firm. Nothing on this page is legal advice.

How we run it

How we set up ChatGPT advertising for lawyers.

One focused campaign

The $25 daily minimum applies per campaign, so splitting a small budget across several campaigns thins the data. We start with one campaign and separate ad groups by practice area.

Context hints for real situations

Hints describe the situation a person is in, in plain language, not a keyword dump. We avoid broad one-word hints like "lawyer" and test narrower ones for each practice area.

A landing page that matches the ad

One page per offer, written for the same practice area as the ad, fast to load, and open to OpenAI's ad crawler so the ad can pass review.

Pixel plus Conversions API

We install the OpenAI Pixel and the Conversions API together, pass the click identifier through, and use matching event IDs so a browser event and a server event count once.

Call tracking

Dedicated tracking numbers for ChatGPT traffic and click-to-call logging, because a form fill is only part of how people contact a law firm.

Signed-case reporting

We reconcile Ads Manager, your analytics and your CRM, the same way we do for Google Ads and Meta, so reports show consultations and signed cases, not just clicks.

Our process

How it works

Step 1

Intake and compliance check

We confirm the practice area, the jurisdiction where the firm is licensed and your state bar rules, and agree on what counts as a qualified lead and a signed case.

Step 2

Build and tracking

Campaign, ad groups, ads, landing page, Pixel, Conversions API and call tracking, all tested before any budget is spent.

Step 3

30-day test

A small daily budget, a fixed bid and two or three ad angles. We check traffic quality every week and pause ads that get clicks but no real activity.

Step 4

Review and decide

At day 30 we show clicks, calls, consultations and signed cases, then recommend whether to stop, adjust or continue. If the sample is too small to prove anything, we tell you.

FAQ

Frequently asked,
plainly answered.

Quick answers to common questions. Every consultation is free, no high-pressure pitching.

Can law firms advertise on ChatGPT? +
As of October 2026, yes in the U.S., under conditions. OpenAI's policy allows ads for legal services only when the advertiser is licensed to practice law in the jurisdiction where the ad appears. Legal-services ads outside the U.S. are prohibited, and OpenAI reviews them case by case. Policies change, so we check the current version before launch.
Where do ChatGPT ads appear? +
Below some answers in ChatGPT, labeled as sponsored, for logged-in adults on the Free and Go plans in countries where ads are live. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Education plans are ad-free. OpenAI says ads do not change the answer, and ads are kept out of sensitive conversations.
How are ChatGPT ads different from Google Ads? +
Google Ads lets you bid on keywords and shows you the searches that triggered your ad. ChatGPT ads use written context hints that guide OpenAI's matching, with no exact-match keywords and no report of what people asked. You judge results by what happens after the click.
How much do ChatGPT ads cost? +
The U.S. minimum is $25 a day per campaign, which is about $750 over 30 days. OpenAI suggests starting cost-per-click bids at $3 to $5. Ad spend is paid to OpenAI and is separate from any management fee.
Will ChatGPT ads bring in cases? +
We cannot promise that. OpenAI has no published benchmarks for law firms, and public tests are mixed. What we can do is set up the test so you learn, with real numbers on calls, consultations and signed cases, whether it is worth continuing.
Can I see what people asked ChatGPT? +
No. OpenAI does not share chats with advertisers and reports only aggregated, non-identifying results. There is no search-terms report, which is why call tracking and CRM data matter so much.
Can I target by practice area, job title or location? +
Location, yes: country, state, city or postal code where supported. Practice area comes through the context hints you write, which guide matching but do not guarantee it. OpenAI's documentation lists no job title, age, interest or lookalike targeting.
How do you track results? +
We use the OpenAI Pixel and Conversions API together, UTM tags, call tracking and your CRM. Spend can lag 7 to 8 hours in Ads Manager and conversions can take 24 to 48 hours to appear, so we avoid same-day decisions.
